Land Management @ Scale
Managing Conflicts
State and national initiatives within the United States have established a goal to protect at least 30% of all lands and oceans by 2030. Currently, only about 12% of US lands are permanently protected from development. According to a study by Conservation Science Partners (2019), approximately 1.5 million acres of natural areas throughout the coterminous US are lost annually, on average, to land conversion. Urban growth has consistently proven the biggest stressor.
Land management at scale first requires defining a network of open spaces that can benefit from multibenefit strategies. What are existing and novel models by which potential conflicts between conservation and land development can be managed?
