MONUMENTALLY QUEER: LGBTQ+ Monuments of the Past, Present & Future
Webinar | June 20, 2024 | 1:00-2:30p ET
Monuments help us remember and keep alive past events, stories, and loss, but only recently are LGBTQ+ histories being honored in public landscapes. Join us as we explore LGBTQ+ monuments and dive into their future through design case studies for two groundbreaking memorials, HOMEGOING and the 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument, on the National Mall and in Canada.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn about LGBTQ+ monuments and placemaking nationally and internationally, and their role in telling untold LGBTQ+ histories and memorializing culturally significant sites.
- Dive into the process of designing two LGBTQ+ memorials on national stages at varying scales – including navigating complex histories, centering marginalized voices, and the role of art in landscape.
- Understand the role and importance of the act of remembering, healing and storytelling, particularly in situ, for the LGBTQ+ community.
- Discover how landscape architects can share LGBTQ+ histories by working with LGBTQ+ communities and experts in the field to memorialize and interpret stories in meaningful and culturally relevant ways.
